About RSS
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an increasingly popular format which allows one to keep up with the latest news on specific topics, or updates to website content, without having to repeatedly visit the originating website(s). An RSS feed is made up of headline, date, and summary information for news items, as well as links to the full new stories on the originating site. RSS feeds by themselves are not intended to be read by humans; they are written in XML (eXtensible Markup Language) code that is compatible with many applications. In order to read the content of RSS feeds, one uses an RSS news reader (sometimes called an RSS news aggregator).
What are News Readers?
RSS news readers or aggregators are either standalone software programs or special website applications that collect information from subscribed RSS feeds and display the headlines in a format that is easy to read. An aggregator can allow a person to scan headlines from many sources in a single convenient location.
Where Can I Find a News Reader?
There are many good RSS News Readers available, in both standalone and web-based formats. Many are free for individual use. A web search should yield a number of choices suitable for many applications. Please note that CTEC does not endorse any specific product.
How Do I Subscribe to a Feed?
The details of subscribing to a specific feed depend upon which news reader is being used, but in general, the RSS reader will need to be set up with the address or URL of the specific feed.
In searching for news feeds to subscribe to, it is helpful to be aware that most websites mark their feeds with the orange RSS icon
